Loose Pickguard Blues
10/31/2008

Q: I have a wonderful old Martin acoustic that I play a lot. My problem is that the pickguard is lifting off the surface of the guitar. What should I use to reattach it?

A: With a Martin (and honestly, with most guitars) we'd strongly suggest taking it to a qualified guitar tech for repair. While there are a number of adhesives that would probably do the trick, there's always the potential for the adhesive to have a negative effect on the guitar's finish, particularly if it's nitrocellulose. Resist the temptation to just fix the problem in the short term and think about how such a fix may affect your instrument's value and appearance down the road!
