Nut Slot Depth

Q: There is a lot of material above the strings on my guitar where they pass through the nut. Should they be buried in the nut like this?

A: Opinions vary, but many techs recommend that, after cutting the nut slots to the proper depth, the excess material at the top of the nut be removed so that the bass strings have about half the diameter of the string above the nut. For the treble strings, the strings should be just deep enough in the nut that they don't pop out when bending strings. If you feel the strings are embedded too deep in the nut, have the instrument looked at by a qualified luthier/repair tech.
