The thread on solving guitar hum continues. This entry, from inSync reader Jim W. points out a potential serious problem for those using the advice of John F. in the TTOTD regarding the use of test leads for grounding a guitarists body to the bridge of the guitar. He says:
"Connecting a guitar player to the bridge like that can be a real bad idea unless you like the idea of getting electrocuted! It basically connects the guitarist to the AC power ground. Of course, the same thing happens when the guitarist touches the strings, if the bridge is connected to AC ground, but at least here the musician has a chance to let go of the strings!Of course, this is mainly a problem if you touch something carrying live current, or bridge two grounds connected to different potentials. Not too many musicians die each year from this, but we need every one we've got!"
Editor's note: In practice I haven't seen this be an issue in many recording studio's, but due diligence and care on the part of participants is warranted when trying things like this. Thanks Jim, for reminding us of these critical safety issues. Safety first, always.
