Combining MIDI Signals
03/17/2009

Q: I need to send two the outputs from two MIDI controllers into a single sound module. How can I do this when the module only has one MIDI input.

A: A device that can merge the two MIDI signals together is going to be required. Some controllers will actually merge the MIDI signals coming in their MIDI inputs with what goes out the output - double-check your controllers' manuals or check with the manufacturer. If neither controller supports merging their MIDI input with output, then an external device that can merge the signals will be necessary - MOTU MIDI Timepiece interfaces, for example, will merge inputs with outputs. You may also be able to find a used MIDI merge box that could be used.
