One of our faithful inSync readers, Marc C. had a very valid point relating to the TTOTD on bit depth from the 2/23/98 issue of inSync.
"In your 'inSync' you mentioned that you achieve better signal to noise with 24 bit than with 16 bit. While this is true in the ideal case, the problem lies in the fact that we live in an analog world, when converting this information to digital and back to analog things like amplifiers noise, gain, and crosstalk limit the performance of the A/D and D/A process. So I thought it just might be worth while to suggest quality in addition to bit quantity."
Editors note: Not to sound like a commercial here, but Apogee has made a living selling high quality converters specifically because of this. There are even more issues such as clock stability and bit mapping that can all come in to play.
