Many of us use extra hard drives as backup and archiving solutions. This works well, but remember, hard drives are like animals and humans: they like to be exercised. In fact, if a hard drive sits idle for too long, it may develop problems - even stop working. It's a good idea to "exercise" your inactive or stored hard drives periodically to ensure that they remain healthy. Just pull them off the shelf, plug them in, spin them up, and access some data.
