Who Needs A Controller?
02/13/2007

Working in Logic Pro without a keyboard controller, but need to enter some notes? You could use the pencil tool or another "non-performance"/non-real-time method for getting them into your track.

Or you can play them in: Just hit the Caps Lock key! Logic will turn your computer's QWERTY keyboard into a music keyboard. The middle row of alpha-letters become the white keys, while some of the next row of letters up become the sharps/flats. The number keys above the alpha keys set the keyboard octave, while the bottom alpha row sets the velocity level.

It's amazingly playable with a little practice, and can transmit up to five notes simultaneously. You can even record its output as MIDI data in a MIDI or instrument track.

You can even make the onscreen keyboard transparent so you can see what's going on in Logic behind it.

This tip is especially cool for laptop users who want to play soft synths in Logic while away from the studio. Or as a quick way to audition soft synth sounds when you don't have a MIDI controller handy.

Our Customers Say...

My Sales Engineer is the best. If I need it tomorrow, I have it tomorrow. He makes sure everything is in order and that I'm set up right. I've spent a lot of money at other places, too, but I don't remember them calling me to make sure everything's okay.
