Mac OS X CD Tray on the Desktop

Sometimes your Mac computer is located several feet away from - or in a separate room from - your keyboard and display. That can make it difficult to know whether your CD/DVD tray is open or closed. Here's a tip: You can place an "Eject " icon in the menu bar on a Mac running OS X Tiger or Panther to open the CD door with your mouse. Simply follow these steps:

Double-click the Macintosh HD icon
Open the System Folder
Within the System Folder, open the Library folder
Open the CoreServices folder
Open Menu Extras
Open the file named "Eject.menu"

The icon will appear at the top right of your display. It's smart, too - mouse over it and it will tell you the name of the disc that's currently in the drive.
