Pizzicato
Often abbreviated in sheet music as 'pizz,' Pizzicato is Italian for pinched. It is a direction for string players regarding a playing style that requires plucking a given string instead of bowing. This style of playing dates as far back as music itself and invokes a completely different emotion to the listener than that of a bowed effect.
