Zero Fret
- An extra fret placed in front of the nut. This was originally done by Gretsch at the request of Chet Atkins, who felt that it would produce a better sounding open string and would thus match the tone produced by fretting a string on a guitar's neck. When a guitar is equipped with a zero fret, the nut is simply there to determine correct string spacing. The zero fret determines the actual height of the string above the fingerboard.
