Ukelele
- This is a small four-string instrument considered to be in the mandolin family. It was brought to the Hawaiian Islands in the late 1870s by immigrants from Madiera and gradually has become synonymous with Hawaiian music. The word ukelele actually translates to "leaping flea" in Hawaiian. Many ukeleles were built from the wood of the koa tree, which is found only in the Hawaiian Islands and has a beautiful three dimensional grain pattern.
