Platter
The actual fixed disk within a hard disk drive. Generally there can be (and usually are these days) several platters within a hard disk drive. A hard drive is constructed basically of a sealed metal housing that protects these magnetically coated platters, a group of read/write heads and an electrical motor. The information written to a hard drive is actually written to the platters themselves.
