Orchestrions
- These were huge barrel organs with pipes, reeds, and even percussion for imitating a real orchestra. They originated in Germany in the late 18th century and were in general, driven by weights, though some were actually water-driven. Some included automata (animated figures) playing instruments, most notably in the glorious Panharmonicon made in Vienna by Leonard Maelzel (whose brother invented the metronome).
