Kerr Effect
- The effect of electromagnetic radiation (i.e. light, for our purposes) changing phase or polarity when acted upon by a magnetic field. This is what allows media such as magneto optical discs to work. When a low power laser strikes a magnetized (written) MO disc, its phase is changed according to what is written magnetically on the disc. These changes in the reflected light are read to recover the data.
