Group
A group consists of any number of faders or channels on a console that are linked and controlled by a single fader or channel strip. A group, or subgroup as it is sometimes called, is commonly utilized to control the volume of two or more faders that are carrying similar signals. For example, hard-panned rhythm guitars are commonly grouped once a relative balance has been achieved so that a single fader can then control the volume of both guitar tracks. Many DAWs have grouping functions that operate in much the same way that physical grouping does, and all edits, muting, automation, soloing, and record arming are carried out simultaneously on all grouped tracks. Groups, or subgroups, can function much like a submix at times and are utilized to provide any number of studio functions.
