I was looking for an easy way to be able to look at my upcoming gigs in my iPod. Musician’s iPod Tools was developed out of that need and I’ve found it to be THE EASIEST (and least expensive) way of getting data into my iPod. The tools are really simple to use and it’s been wonderful to be able to carry around all my favorite music and my entire calendar in the same little iPod. Amazing!

More About Musician’s iPod Tools

There are two programs that make up the Musician’s iPod Tools:

Both tools use different approaches to accomplish the same basic goal. The goal is to allow the user to store and view data in the iPod.

Contacts Tool

The iPod ContactsTool makes it possible to store any kind of list in the iPod’s Contacts section. Whether it’s a basic calendar, an equipment list, a song list, or even a list of recipes, the iPod ContactsTool can help you get it into your iPod.

How does it work?

It works by processing any tab-delimited text file (up to 5 fields) and outputting a text file in V-Card format. Then, all you have to do is take this file and drop it into the “Contacts” folder on your iPod.

Importing tips

  1. Sort Order: Remember that the iPod automatically lists your contacts by the values in the first-field position of your data import. In order for the data you import to show up at the top of the iPod contacts list, two blank spaces are added automatically by the ContactsTool. You can further alter the iPod’s sort order by adding additional characters (like dashes or commas) to the beginning of the first-position field in each record.
  2. Calendar Import Format: The Calendar Import option was originally intended for use with TeamAgenda exports. However it can be used with any calendar program that can export a tab-delimited text file with start and end time fields in military format (hh:mm) and the date field in year-first format (yyyy/mm/dd). The dates must be in year-first format or they will not sort correctly in the iPod. The ContactsTool will automatically place Mo, Tu, We, Th, Fr, Sa, or Su at the end of every date field when it shows up in the iPod.
  3. Record Numbering: You’ll notice in the example screen shots that all the contacts imported using the ContactsTool are numbered. This shows you at a glance how many “records” there are for each contact when you are in “list mode” browsing through all the contacts. Because of this, you will want to keep your data in the first-field of your import relatively short (around 16 characters more or less) to avoid having it “bleed” off the side of the screen.
MP3 Tool

The iPod MP3Tool makes it possible to store any kind of list as MP3 song data. Whether it’s a basic calendar, an equipment list, a song list, or even a list of recipes, the iPod MP3Tool can help you get it into your iPod.

How does it work?

There are a few steps in the process of getting data from your tab-delimited text file into the iPod using the MP3Tool.

  1. Double-click on the MP3Tool.
  2. Choose a tab-delimited text file (must be 2-fields or less).
  3. Choose a blank MP3 file. We provide you with a few different lengths of blank MP3 files to choose from. The one you choose will be used to populate iTunes with your data. You may ask, “Why do I need to specify a blank MP3 file?” The MP3Tool will duplicate this file over and over again to make the copies that will be modified with data from your text file and placed in iTunes. The duplicates are automatically deleted as you go so there’s no clean up.
  4. Choose the heading that you want to appear in your iPod’s Artists list. All the data you’re importing will be found under the name you specify in the iPod Artists list.
  5. Line up how you want the fields to flow in. Which field do you want to come in under Album and under Song? Use the little up and down arrows to change the field order.
  6. Press the “Make MP3s in iTunes” button and wait for the import to complete. All your data will be added to iTunes.
  7. Connect your iPod to download the new MP3s you just made.

Our Customers Say...

When it came time to start from scratch with the studio, I had a lot of questions. The Sales Engineers I've worked with are really friendly and patient, and the guidance they provided was invaluable; they basically helped build the studio.
