What is a solidbody guitar?

A solidbody guitar is a type of electric guitar with a body made of solid wood. This does not mean that the body is always a single piece of wood. Solidbody guitars may be made of multiple pieces of wood glued together to form a solid mass. Most importantly, solidbody guitars have no hollowed-out sections — except where material is removed to accommodate pickups, electronics, and controls.

Solidbody guitars, like the Fender Telecaster, Fender Stratocaster, Gibson Les Paul, and Gibson SG, are quintessential rock ‘n’ roll guitars. They’re built tough. Plus, they tend to provide more sustain than semi-hollowbody and hollowbody guitars, since the density of body wood contributes to a guitar’s sustain.

What’s the difference between a solidbody and hollowbody guitar?

The big difference between a solidbody and a hollowbody guitar is that a solidbody guitar has solid-wood body construction while a hollowbody is completely hollow inside — like an acoustic guitar. Cosmetically, solidbody guitars are slimmer, and they lack sound holes or f-holes.

Compared to hollowbody guitars, solidbody guitars have a unique tone. They offer greater sustain, are more resistant to feedback from pickups, and feature a tighter low-end response. This is why solidbody guitars are favored by guitarists of heavy styles of music, like rock ‘n’ roll, punk, and heavy metal.

Can you play a solidbody guitar without an amp?

Technically, yes you can play a solidbody guitar without a guitar amplifier. But these body types have very little natural projection. To unlock their true potential, solidbody electric guitars need to be plugged into an amp.
