About Dynamic Microphones

As the largest online musical instrument and pro-audio retailer in the country, Sweetwater is your source for microphones. The world-class recording studio on our Fort Wayne campus is equipped with the best vintage and modern mics on the planet - many of them quite exotic. And yet when it comes to miking a snare drum or a guitar amp, our engineers might well reach for a $100 mic. Why is that? When you need an affordable workhorse microphone that's virtually indestructible and able to handle extremely high sound pressure levels, you want a dynamic mic. Indispensable in the studio and onstage, a good selection of dynamic mics is the cornerstone of every engineer's mic locker. And with many of our employees using dynamic microphones in commercial or home studios on a daily basis, Sweetwater is uniquely qualified to help recommend the right ones for your needs.

Wander into any world-class recording studio; you'll see dynamic mics from venerable pro-audio companies such as Shure, Sennheiser, Electro-Voice, AKG, Beyerdynamic, and Telefunken, as well as acclaimed products from relative newcomers like Blue Microphones, Audix, RODE, and Audio-Technica. Sweetwater is proud to carry all these fine brands. Big session coming in? You can't go wrong with a Sennheiser MD 421 or AKG D112 on kick drum and a Shure SM57 on snare and guitar amps. Live vocals? An SM58 is a solid choice. You can experiment later if time permits, but these industry standards will always serve as excellent starting points.

Most popular dynamic mics have a cardioid polar pattern, which means they capture sound primarily from in front of them and have fairly effective rejection of off-axis sound coming from the sides and back, which makes them suitable for the majority of studio and stage applications. Less common, supercardioid mics are more directional than a cardioid; hypercardioid mics even more so. Unlike cardioid, these highly directional polar patterns exhibit sensitive rear lobes that pick up sound, which can make positioning them somewhat challenging. Quite rare, dynamic mics with omnidirectional and figure-8 polar patterns tend to be employed for more specialized tasks.
